Getting Your Medications

The days of insurance companies paying for any and all prescription medications are long gone. But there are still things you – as a pain patient and as a consumer – can do to get the treatment you need.

Understanding what your insurance company requires and what your rights are in your state is an important part of advocating for yourself and getting the treatment you need. The National Pain Foundation has developed documents  that explain the details of every state's medication insurance rights policies. Simply click on the state you live in and you’ll be connected to a page that explains types of coverage, brand name versus generic medications, drug lists, changing or "switching" medications on the list, costs, limitations/prior approval and appeals. The pages also include important contact information and sample letters to customize and use when either protesting a medication being changed on – or switched from – an approved list or appealing a coverage decision regarding a specific medication.
